Experience
I have taught both in a one on one context in a non-public school as well as in traditionally populated public school classrooms. I have taught school classes in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus and SAT Math Preparation. I have also tutored in these same subjects as well as in College Calculus 2 and College Algebra. I try to help a student by connecting or comparing with what a student already understands or is familiar with. I will break complex processes into smaller steps. I will use visuals and patterns to aid learning. I will communicate with the student to determine specific obstacles to understanding that need to be removed; and I will try to figure out ways to help a student remember procedures, steps or relationships. My goal, for better concept retention and application, is for students to be able to understand and use concepts, rather than for just memorization. I am willing to adjust my teaching goals and emphasis to what is wanted or needed by the paying client. My approach to students is to be non-judgmental in regards to their difficulties. However, I also want students to gain self confidence in the abilities and understanding they do have. Courses I have taken since my Teacher Certification program include strategies for teaching mathematics to students who are low achievers as well as accelerated.
